Cleopatra was a feral cat from a small neighborhood cat colony that I take care of. She was one of the most beautiful cats I've ever seen, so lovely that she could have been a cat model. She was a silver tabby with a delicate head and stunning emerald green eyes. Unfortunately, I never got a photo of her that captured her beauty.
I believe she was the granddaughter of my beloved late Romeo. Being so, I'd hoped to tame her, but was unsuccessful.
In the late summer of 2012, My husband and I rounded up several feral cats and had them neutered/spayed. We let them recuperate in the basement and intended to permanently house them in a cattery we built in the backyard. But, unlike the other cats, Cleo never warmed up to me and was depressed about being confined.
In addition, she was separated from her father, another feral whom I'd dubbed "Rabbit." The two were close, always together and would chatter to each other as if having a conversation. I believe she grieved for him. So after she recovered from her surgery, I freed her.
She was overjoyed to be reunited with Rabbit and immediately returned to her normal lively self. She spent the fall laying in the sun and enjoying Rabbit's company.
The cost of her freedom, however, was high. In the early hours of November 26, a car ran over her.
I miss seeing her come to the porch every morning for breakfast. Though she never fully warmed up to me, I believe she enjoyed seeing me each day and knew her name. I'm sad that she was taken so soon. I've only seen the elusive Rabbit a couple of times since her death, but I'm sure he misses her too.
