Dakota Beloved Friend
Birth: 1997
Ramsey County
Minnesota, USA
Death: Apr. 24, 2011
Eagan
Dakota County

On Easter Sunday we had to put our beloved Dakota, to rest. I have always disliked the words "putting him down". We were not putting him down we were putting him to rest. We had many people, who as they watched with us Dakota's decline in health tell us how hard that fateful day would be. Nothing could prepared us for his final day.

Survived by his family Brice, Brooke, Logan, Aeden and Kaitlyn

In Memory,
Dakota was dumped at a shelter and had a very hard life before we found each other. He moved into our home and into our hearts so quickly. With each birth of our children he was there. Watching with big brown eyes, filled with love and devotion. He never asked for anything but always gave so much.
Dakota was instinctively protective of our family. He was a fury body guard no unwanted visitors were aloud in our home with Dakota at the door.

This same dog was as gentle as could be when he played with our children, and our cat. Over the years Dakota would be extremely tolerant and protective of our family, especially our three children. Dakota was our friend and he really loved each and everyone of us.

Dakota had an incurable disease called Degenerative Mylelopathy. There was nothing that would stop it. This horrible disease attacked his spinal cord and ruined all of the nerves in this back and legs. It has been a challenge for our family because we cherished the time we had, while knowing it would come to a painful decision.

Our home is not the same without Dakota. We miss the welcome home he used to give us. Whether we were gone an hour or a day, he was happy to see us. Sometimes we still think we hear him. We feel a little less safe and a little less loved.

What an incredible blessing to know him. As he was closing his eyes for the last time I whispered in his ear, how honored we were to have him in our lives. How we would always remember him and that his paw print was forever in our hearts. I thanked him for his love and devotion, knowing that his loving heart had beat for so long in pain, but wagging his tail through it all, now was stopping.

That great big beautiful soul lifted out of that pain ridden body, and he left us.

Dakota taught us the true meaning of unconditional love, He was part of a greater picture of life... A teacher of sanity when things were insane, a calming influence when it was needed.

I know he waits in felid's of green, pain free and that one day we will come walking over that bridge and he will be there waiting, just as he waited at the door for our return home.

Until then Dakota...
