Was the son of Caleb and Anna Cook Beals/Bales. His first wife was Adela (Gardner) Bales. They were married by bond dated 8 Jan 1856 in Guilford Co., NC, and they had two children, Nathan Marmaduke and Mary Annie. He then married Lois Phoebe Kersey on 20 Mar 1867. They had 4 children.

John W. Bales died Saturday afternoon of apoplexy, aged 72 years, five months and eight days. He was a native of North Carolina, coming to this county in 1868. He was twice married. Two children by the first marriage live in North Carolina. The widow and four children survive at Hadley. The funeral was Monday afternoon from the Friends church here, the ministers being Revs. David and Sarah Hadley and Nelson Wright. The Masons gave their ritualistic work, the deceased having been a Master Mason for some fifty years. The gathering of friends and neighbors showed in what high esteem Mr. Bales was held in this community.
