Atomic Official. He was the longest-serving member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and a forceful advocate of nuclear technolocy. A Democrat, he was appointed to the NRC twice by President Clinton and reappointed by President George Bush, serving an unprecedented three terms.
McGaffigan obtained a bachelor's degree in Physics from Harvard, a Master's degree in Physics from California Institute of Technology, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from Harvard.
Edward McGaffigan died from melanoma at Capital Hospice in Arlington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Weeks McGaffigan, who died from Huntington's Disease.
