Joseph Cleophas Mattingly Sr., 84, Louisville, died April 1, 2008, at Bashford East Health Care in Louisville.

Born Feb. 7, 1924, in Marion County, Mattingly was a former employee of the old Seagrams Distillery in St. Francis and a United States Army Veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by: his father, William Monroe Mattingly; mother, Edna Elizabeth Sapp Mattingly; a daughter, Linda Victoria Mattingly; four sons, Francis Ernest, Stanley Carmen, Ronald Baine and infant William Eric Mattingly; a brother, William Ernest Mattingly; two half-brother, Alfonso and Forest Mattingly; and seven sisters, Mary Cecilia Skaggs, Mary Joetta Mattingly O.S.U., Mary Lucy Mattingly O.S.U., Flora Frances Collins, Mary Ruby Boswell, Mary Lucille Maupin and Joetta Baker.

Survivors include: his wife, Thelma Cahoe Mattingly; six daughters, Connie Dixon and Becky Cox, both of Louisville, Mary Ann Blair and Bessie Peterson, both of Lebanon, Debbie Carter of Lancaster and Margo Trap of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son: Joe Mattingly of Mt. Washington; a sister, Mae Shelton of St. Louis, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A memorial services were held April 4 at Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto. Rev. R. Joseph Hemmerle officiated. Burial of cremains was in the St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, St. Francis. The Marion County Vetrans Honor Guard performed military rites.

Urnbearers were grandsons, Joseph Cleophas "Joey" Mattingly III, Randy Hill, Jimmy Blair and Nathaniel Weathers.

Mattingly Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Thelma Cahoe Mattingly; six daughters, Connie Dixon and Becky Cox, both of Louisville, Mary Ann Blair and Bessie Peterson, both of Lebanon, Debbie Carter, Lancaster, and Margo Trap, Cincinnati; a son Joe Mattingly, Mount Washington; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grand- children; and a sister, Mae Shelton, St. Louis.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Friday at Mattingly Funeral Home with burial of cremains in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, St. Francis, where the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard will perform military rites.
