John R. "Jack" Sprau, 87, of Sandusky, passed away early Thursday morning, June 14, 2012, at his home.
He was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Sandusky, son of the late Daniel and Minnie (Appell) Sprau. He was a 1942 graduate of Sandusky High School. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the infantry in the European Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing and traveling throughout the years.
He retired in 1984, after more than 30 years in the Sandusky Fire Department with the rank of captain. Jack was a lifetime member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ and was an active volunteer in church service and council for many years; a life-member of the VFW Post 2529; a member of American Legion Post 83; and the DAV.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice (Moos) Sprau; his five children, Ruthann (Larry) Reeves, of King, N.C., Barbara (Adolfo) Leal, of Huron Twp., Daniel (Kathy) Sprau, of Memphis, Tenn., Ellen (David) Behrendsen, of Sandusky, and Michael (Rhonda) Sprau, of Rocky River, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Besides his parents, he also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Nielsen and Mildred Nye; and brother Ralph, who was killed in W.W. II.
The family will receive friends 10-10:45 a.m. Monday, June 18, when the Sandusky Fire Department will conduct a Bell Service, prior to a memorial service at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Jerald A. Fenske will officiate. Interment will take place later in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
