1st Lt Owen Barnhart Jr. was the pilot of B-29 "Deaner Boy" S/N 42-24815. The plane and crew had taken off from the American base at Tinian for a bombing raid on the Makijima Aircraft Company, Ota, Japan. "Deaner Boy" collided with "Slick's Chicks", another B-29 on the same mission. Japanese records indicate that "Slick's Chicks" had been rammed by one of their planes. Official American reports indicate that "Slick's Chick's" #4 engine came into contact with "Deaner Boy's" tail section sending both planes to the ground. There were no survivors of either plane. Locals from the nearby town of Ora cremated the remains of the crew and later returned them to US authorities. The town recently dedicated a stone cenotaph honoring the lost flyers.
