Carlton Howard Bedford was born in Winters, Runnels County, Texas on March 9, 1900 to Lee Archie Bedford and Maggie Lee Carlton. Carlton served in the US Navy during the Great War. Striking out on his own while in his early 20's Carlton headed for NYC to seek his fortune. Not soon after he was smitten by Ms. Mary Josephine Walsh of County Mayo, EIRE, a recent immigrant living with cousins. In 1923 they were married in Brooklyn, New York.

Carlton worked a variety of jobs including as a taxi driver, sand hog (building the New York City tunnel system) and as a ship welder. Settling down he and Mary had six children as follows:

Ruby Mary "DeLong" (1925-1998)
Elaine "Ryder" (1928-2013)
Howard Carlton (1929-2023)
Joan Ann "Ross" (1931-2007)
Patricia Ann "Norrgard" (1938-)
