MRS BREWER, PIONEER MOTHER, PASSES AWAY
Kensal and community has been saddened the past week with the passing of perhaps our oldest pioneer mother in the person of Mrs Delia Brewer. Death occurred Saturday morning in the Trinity hospital in Jamestown after a two week illness due to old age.
Her passing came as a shock to the community, even though it was known that she had been in poor health for some time. Mrs Brewer's declining health dated since last fall when she sustained several fractured ribs in a fall here. This injury kept her in the hospital up until Christmas.
Mrs Brewer was born in Ireland, March 20, 1854. She came to the United States with her parents when 10 years of age. The family settled at Eyota, Minnesota, where she was later married to Mr (James Hubert) Brewer in 1880.
Mr Brewer came to Kensal in 1898 and his family joined him three years later on the homestead north of town. Mr Brewer, in time, became one of the community's most prosperous farmers, at one time owning 17 quarters (2,720 acres) of land. Before his death in 1928, he and Mrs Brewer spent a large number of the winters in California. After retiring from farm life, the couple took up their residence in Kensal. Since disposing of the town residence, Mrs Brewer has made her home with her son, Arthur.
Mrs Brewer was a devout, christian mother, was loved by everyone and the influence of life such as hers, has been felt by all who knew her. During her declining years, Mrs Brewer has enjoyed the companionship and support of her son, Arthur, who has done everything possible to give her every comfort.
Survivors are three sons, Walter, George and Arthur, all of Kensal; three daughters, Mrs Mary Cress, Lewiston, Idaho; Mrs George (Nora) Kern, Whitmore, California; Mrs Martin (Anna) Sebastian, Hingham, Montana. There are fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A brother, Thomas Moran of Waseca, Minnesota and two sisters, Mrs Nora Leete, Kensel and Mrs Sarah Siewert of St Paul, also survives.
Funeral services were held from St John's Catholic Church Wednesday morning at 10 AM, with Father A.H. Zimmerman officiating. Burial was made in the family lot at St John's Cemetery.
Pallbearers were R.C. Frerickson, Victor Lonski, Frank Schieb, J.D. Schlecht, Ambrose and Vincent Abledinger.
