John L. Stevenson enlisted as a sergeant at Contra Costa, California, September 5, 1861, and was mustered into Company A, 2nd California Cavalry, at the Presidio of San Francisco October 2. He was later transferred to Company F. Sergeant Stevenson re-enlisted September 19, 1864, and was mustered out at Camp Union, California, July 5, 1865. After the war he eventually settled at Tucson, Arizona, where he was a member of Negley Post, Grand Army of the Republic. His post comrades buried him in the G.A.R. plot of the Court Street Cemetery. When the Court Street Cemetery closed, he was reinterred at Evergreen Cemetery.
