Obituary of Aaron Stottlemyer

Aaron Stottlemyer, son of Hiram and Elizabeth Stottlemyer, was born near Highland, Frederick Co. Maryland, July 22, 1848, departed this life Feb. 24, 1922, aged 73 years, 7 mo. and 4 days, at his country home in the eastern part of Wayne Tp. Hamilton Co., Ind., after a lingering illness of four or five years duration.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Amanda C. Gaver, July 22 1869. To this union were born ten children, nine of whom with the widow survive. The children include James E., Mrs. A. C. Huffman, Mrs W. C. Turner, Harry, Lee, Richard, Mrs. Ralph Presser, Parker and Rowena (at home). Mrs. J. W. Dewitt preceded him in 1909. There are 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Aaron was of a family of eleven children, three of whom survive: James and John of Anderson, Ind. and Mrs. Alice Smith of Frederick, Md. He united with the M.E. church at Lapel, Ind., during the pastorate of J. B. Cook, always attending church when his health would permit. He remained faithful to the end. He was also a great admirer of P. E. Greenwalt, a former pastor often calling his [him] to his home to pray with him and talk of his Christ, after his health would not permit him to attend church. Aaron was of a jovial disposition never missing many opportunities to show his neighbors the sunny side of life, ever ready to help the needy. The nights were never too dark nor dreary for him to give aid in his humble way.

... He was also connected with the I.O.R.M. having joined this lodge in 1890 at Fishersburg and remaining faithful until three years ago, when he notified the lodge that he would withdraw his membership as he was afraid he would become too much of a burden on the members on account of the financial condition of the Tribe at that time. In the death of Aaron, the children have lost their best counselor, the community a good Christian, and the poor and needy a good friend.
