At the dawn of the 20th Century on December 12, 1912, a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, friend and citizen, Mattie Bell Livingston Echols was born to Ausia A. Livingston and Ada Carter. Her birth place was in the confines of the small community of Kirvin in Freestone County, Texas.

The years passed quietly yet eventful with the expected experiences of those born during the lonely days of our newly extended freedoms and opportunities. Her parents were proud to send Mattie to the public schools of that day in Freestone County, and later was afforded to the coveted privilege of attending Prairie View A&M College. She was awarded a B.S. degree in the class of 1958 from the now Prairie A&M University.

In keeping with family tradition at an early age, she became a member of the African Methodist Church. In keeping with standards of the Godly life she had chosen, Mattie married Jack W. Echols and to this union a son was born Jack Jr. and a daughter born Ruby Joy.

In the early 1960's, Mattie and the daughter moved with Dr. Echols to Prairie View College. Her husband had received a professorship at the college, and thus began a legacy of distinguished college and community service. During life's journey, Mattie Echols was always a faithful and dedicated member of the Methodist Church. Some twenty-six years earlier, she joined a team of Christians to help form a United Methodist church in the township of Prairie View, Texas.  As a charter member for many years, she served as treasurer of the church, and was active in all work areas of the church.

Mattie Bell was an active member of the Prairie View Retired Teachers Association. She provided off-campus housing for many students attending the university, as well as serving as their mentor and friend.

Those cherishing her memory and remember her life's journey are many. Mattie leaves to celebrate her life a daughter Ruby Joy Echols Thomas; grandsons Wendell, Allyn (Nicole) and Quintin; great grandchildren Jordan, Allyn ll, Kristian and Adrienne; sisters Oveta Johnson and Lillian Lott; and brothers Dogan H. Livingston and Robert Livingston. Preceded her in death are a son Jack Jr. and siblings Traswell Livingston and Delilah Livingston Echols.

"Early in the morning on July 19, 1999, Mattie Bell Livingston Echols went home to be with the Lord."
