Donald served as a 1st Lt., Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
He resided in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland prior to the war.
Donald was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Reburial service for First Lt. Donald Moore Cookman, son of Mr and Mrs. H.M. Cookman of 24 East Atietam Street, will be held tomorrow at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
The Marine officer was killed November 13, 1943 during the assult on Bougainville Island in the South Pacific. At the time the 23 year old was commanding headquarters company of Third Battalion, 21 Marines.
Donald was born February 1, 1920 in Clarksburg, W.Va. He attended high School in Romney. He graduated from Ptomac State College and West Virginia University.
On February 5, 1941, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve and while attending West Virginia University was called on April 5, 1941 into active service.
Besides his parents, a brother, James B. of Romney, W.Va. survives.
