INJURIES FATAL TO ORVILLE BARKDOLL
LOCAL SOLDIER FATALLY HURT IN AUTO CRASH NEAR RICHMOND
Pfc. Orville Barkdoll, 27, formerly of 931 Maryland avenue, died at 8:10 yesterday morning in an Army hospital in Richmond, Va., from injuries received on the night of March 5 in an automobile crash.
Stationed at Camp Butner, N.C., Barkdoll was returning after a furlough last week when the auto in which he with three other soldiers was riding left the road at the western city limits of Richmond, and crashed into a tree. One of his companions, Pfc. Walter A. Cox, 27, Martinsburg, W.Va., died and the other two men were injured.
The soldier, who was 28 years old, was born and reared in Hagerstown, and at the time of his induction last December, he was employed as a welder at Fairchild Aircraft. After spending the weekend with friends here, he was returning to his station when the accident occurred. His wife was at his bedside in Richmond when the end came.
The soldier was a member of Company H, the 63rd infantry, at Camp Butner.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman D. Barkdoll and besides his parents he is survived by his wife, Lucille and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Charles Stouffer, Mrs. Clarence Holder, Mrs. Harmon Bowers, Mrs. Harold Carter, Misses Mary C., Charlotte L., Jo Ann B., Janet L., Katherine A., Maxine L., Alfred G., Russell S., Walter E., and James A., all of this city. Pvt. Francis, Camp Land, Fla.
The body will be brought to the A.K. Coffman funeral home today, where services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m., Rev. D.C. White officiating. Interment in National cemetery, Sharpsburg.
