Bobbie Marguerite Bair Short, 92, of Beckley, West Virginia, passed away March 13, 2009. A celebration of life service was held March 16, 2009, in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Park. Rev. Adrian Pratt of Beckley Presbyterian Church officiated, with grandsons and nephews serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Short was the last surviving child of Robert Taylor and Mabel Kent Bair. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Short, as well as her sisters, Ruth Snead, Marie Lynch, Ina Bair, Nedra Diehl. Lucille Donovan, and brothers, Adolph and James Bair.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, and attended Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg, WV. She graduated from Morris Harvey College, Charleston, WV, with a degree in education, and taught elementary school for over 25 years in the Raleigh County school system.
A member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, she attended faithfully until her health began to decline. She was a member of the Raleigh County Retired Teachers Association, the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution, and United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was especially proud of being a dedicated volunteer at the Beckley VA Hospital for a number of years. A patriotic woman, she always few the American flag at her home. She will be remembered for her love of sports. She was a follower of the local high school sports teams, and an avid fan of the West Virginia University football and basketball teams.
She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Akers (Richard) of Fredericksburg, VA; son, Ted Short (Jackie) of Dublin; grandsons, Brandon Akers (Toni) of Mount Pleasant, SC, and William Short of Atlanta, Ga.; and great-granddaughter, Savannah Akers. She is also survived by her step-grandsons, Craig and Rob Gannaway of Dublin, and Russell Gannaway of New York, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
