Joyce Cope Huie, Armistice Day 1915-Christmas Eve 2009
Joyce Rebecca Cope Huie was born on November 11, 1915, to Notie Headden and Ira Mitchell Cope in the Churchton Community east of Newbern. She was delivered by Dr. W.O. Sullivan for $7.00 during World War I. In 1933 she graduated as salutatorian from Newbern High School, and in 1938 graduated with an A.B. degree in Latin and Greek from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she belonged to Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
She taught first grade at the old Edgewood community school in Dyer County, then married Howard Ewing Huie in 1939, on May 2. Ewing and Joyce Huie had two daughters, Sophie Huie Cashdollar of Dyersburg and Marsha Cope Huie-Williamson of San Antonio, who survive her with their husbands, Dr. Parker Ditmore Cashdollar and Ralph Ervin Williamson. Two grandchildren survive her: Hunter Huie Cashdollar and Jessica Huie Cashdollar (Mrs. Brian Louis Blackwell) and two great-grandchildren, Parker Louis Cashdollar Blackwell, aged 3, and Wyatt Ewing Cashdollar Blackwell, aged one month.
Mrs. Huie was a member of the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church at Newbern. She taught Latin and English at the old Yorkville High School some twenty years, and taught an adult Bible class for sixty years. On the morning before she died, she worked the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. She saw London, Edinburgh, Paris, Madrid, Geneva, and Heidelberg, but loved no place more than the old Huie home standing since 1830 on the Dyer-Gibson County Line.
Her family acknowledges her lifelong friend, Annie Glen McCorkle of Nashville; Jennifer Huie Tucker and Jane Brown of the Churchton community; and doctors Michael Smithson Kinnard and Jennifer Jones Kinnard, and Karen Seaton, home-health nurse. Mrs. Huie leaves also the beloved staff and residents of the Canterbury Place Assisted Living facility in Dyersburg where she lived for almost three years.
Funeral services for Mrs. Huie will be held Sunday, December 27, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Johnson-Williams Funeral Home. Officiating this service will be Rev. Gus Lohrum. Interment will follow in McCorkle Cemetery in Newbern, Tennessee. Visitation for Mrs. Huie will begin at 2:00 p.m.
