Lloyd C. Stearman was an Aviation Pioneer, American Aviator, Business Magnate and Aircraft Designer. He attended Kansas State College 1917-1918, later renamed Kansas State University, in Manhatten, Kansas. He studied engineering and architecture. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1918 in San Diego, California. Stearman learned to fly Curtiss N-9 Seaplanes. During the mid 1920's, Matty Laird, designer of the Laird Swallow Aircraft, hired Lloyd as a Mechanic. On Feburary 4th, 1925, Cessna and Beech teamed up with Stearman to form Travel Air Manufacturing, in 1927 he left to form his own company, designing bi-winged planes for mail and cargo delivery. In the 1930's he became President of Lockheed Aircraft, today known as Lockheed Martin Corporation. Mr. Stearman was inducted into the National Hall of Aviation Fame in Dayton, Ohio in July of 1989, 14 years after his death. He was buried in the National Sawtelle Cemetery of Los Angeles County, California.
