OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - February 22, 2011
Thomas E. Dean, 84, of Wabash, Indiana died at 5:40 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2011 at the Wabash County Hospital. He was born May 17, 1926 in Windfall, Indiana to Guy D. and Viola (Courtney) Dean.
Tom graduated from Tipton High School in 1944, attended Purdue University, where he played basketball under Coach Piggy Lambert, and graduated from Ball State in 1949.
He married Virginia "Ginny" Sylvester in Lapel, Indiana on October 22, 1947. Tom began his professional career teaching and coaching at Northwestern High School near Kokomo, Indiana and at Garrett High School in Garrett, Indiana. He moved to Wabash in 1954 and was the sales manager at Container Corporation, working there until 1966. In 1966 Tom and Larden Hoffman started Custom Cartons, Inc., and he worked there until his retirement in 1994. Tom and his wife Ginny loved antiquing. They had an antique shop in their home and also in several antique malls.
He officiated basketball and football in high schools and colleges for 25 years, and officiated both sports in the Mid American Conference and basketball in the Big Ten Conference. He was a member of the Wabash First United Methodist Church. Tom was also a 50 year member of the Hanna Masonic Lodge, a member of the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, and Mizpah Shrine, the York Rite Bodies, and the Wabash Shrine Club. He was also a member of the Wabash Elks Lodge, and the American Legion Post 15. He was a WWII Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Dean and daughter, Sharon (Charles) Bair, both of Wabash; two grandchildren, Jessica Bair of West Lafayette, Indiana, and Erica Bair of Indianapolis, Indiana, and brother, Dr. Harold Day of Boerne, Texas. He was preceded in death by two brothers and 1 sister.
Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave. Wabash, on Friday, February 25, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Alan LaRue officiating. #Burial will be in Falls Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Masonic Services will be 7 p.m Thursday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Animal Shelter of Wabash County or the Shriner's Hospital for Children.
