James M. Davis enlisted as a private at Camp Latham, California, on October 9, 1861, and was mustered into Company H, 1st California Infantry. He died of injuries on January 18, 1862, at Fort Yuma, California, after he struck his head on a stone while diving into the Colorado River. He was buried at the old Fort Yuma cemetery and his remains were later transferred to the San Francisco National Cemetery.
