Born in Virginia, Daniel Show became part of the westward movement in the mid-Nineteenth Century, for a time playing a role as a prominent member of the American frontier society forming in the Oregon Territory.

Daniel was a passenger aboard the Schooner Georgiana which set out on an ill-fated search for gold in the northern Oregon Territory in November 1851. For an account of this adventure, see "Shipwreck & Captivity, the Georgiana Expedition to the Queen Charlotte Islands" by Drew W. Crooks, in: Columbia, The Magazine of Northwest History, Summer 1994.

In the early 1860s Daniel established a ranch at the west end of Micheltorena Street in Santa Barbara.
