Soot was rescued as a puppy from the animal shelter. He got his name because he liked to lie in the soot and ashes of an outdoor fireplace.
While in San Diego, Soot was well trained enough that he was offered a contract to be an animal actor. Shaun never really followed through to have the pictures made and sign the contract because he didn't want to be seperated from Soot for extended periods.
He was a very playful lab, and Shaun loved to take him wherever he could. Soot especially loved fishing. Whenever Shaun caught a fish and gave it to Soot, he would walk around with the fish in his mouth for a while until Shaun was ready to let the fish go. Soot would also jump off the pier after the fishing lure sometimes when Shaun made a cast. Soot loved to chase bluegills and would oftentimes lunge after the fish and fall off the pier. It was impossible to keep him out of the water wherever Shaun took him. It didn't matter if he fell or jumped off the pier or if he jumped in the waters around a small dam. Soot also believed that when fish got away from him they would hide under the rocks and he would stick his head under the water looking under rocks until the bubbles stopped then he would come up for air. On almost all fishing trips, he would misjudge his steps and backed off a pier into the lake sideways, backwards, or forwards. He wasn't stupid, he just didn't care!
He was such a faithful protector that one one trip with Shaun, he was asleep in the front seat of the suv when a bear and cubs crossed the road in front of them. Soot never woke up and continued snoring. Another time Soot woke Shaun up when there was a porcupine at the door trying to get in the house. He had his priorities straight on who he thought was a danger. He also loved fireworks and would chase bottle rockets and firecrackers for hours if Shaun let him.
By the time I met him, he was getting on in years, so I nicknamed him, "the old man." He had a calm, sweet personality. I also called him, "doggie number seven", because the white fur on his chest looked like that number.
Soot will be missed and is still seen and played with in Shaun's dreams.
