Michael is buried beside Vincent Clinton.
OBITUARY June 13, 1853 - Accidental drowning was the verdict today of Lee County Coroner Robert Preston following an inquest into the death Friday of a 17-year
old farm youth in a stone quarry between Amboy and Ohio. Michael Francis Clinton, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Clinton, Rt. 2, Ohio drowned late Friday afternoon while swimming in the Brandau quarry. Preston questioned Jack Scully, also of Rt. 2, Ohio, who witnessed the drowning and Henry Kelley, Lee county deputy, who recovered the body.
According to the coroner, Clinton apparently suffered cramps while swimming and went under in 10 feet of water. Preston said that Clinton and Sculley apparently went swimming to escape the heat while on their way home from work. The drowning happened at about 5:30 p.m. and the body was recovered at 6:15 p.m. Scully said that neither he nor Ciinton could swim well. However, he went into the water first and Clinton followed, swimming out about 25 feet where the water was 10 feet deep. Scully told Chief Deputy Sheriff John Stouffer that Clinton disappeared suddenly in the deep water and came to the surface only once. Realizing he couldn't swim well enough to rescue his companion, Scully ran to the nearest farm to summon help.
Deputy Kelly found the body by swimming to the spot where Clinton last was seen. Dixon city and rural firemen rushed to tne scene with a resuscitator, boat, and motor. Ohio firemen also responded to the call for assistance.
Clinton was graduated recently from Ohio high school and was working for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroad. He is the eldest of six children and is survived by his parents four sisters, Mary Catherine, Roberta, Mary, Jean, and Elaine and a brother, David, all at home.
