Oda Hegner Hass Silven was born on September 16, 1896 in Walnut, Iowa. She was one of four children born to Amelia Hegner and Ludvig Christian Pedersen. Oda graduated from Walnut High School in 1916. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College for her normal Training. Oda taught rural school for several years in the Walnut area.
On February 11, 1920 Oda Hegner Pedersen was united in marriage to Bernhardt Hass. To this union two daughters were born. Oda and Barney farmed in the Walnut area until their retirement. She was a member of the Walnut Lutheran Church, the Walnut Order of Eastern Star as well as various sewing and card clubs. Oda was a 4-H leader for many years and was active in many other extension programs. Barney and Oda wintered in Phoenix, Arizona after their retirement. After Barney's death Oda continued to return to Arizona for the winter. She met and married William Silven and made Arizona her permanent home.
Oda was an amazing woman who learned to swim at the age of 60, learned to bike at the age of 70, took painting classes at the age of 80 and for her 90th birthday went snorkeling in the Cayman Islands. She was always starting a new hobby. Because of her energy and longevity of life, Oda and her sister, Pearl, were involved in a Centurion Study conducted by Boston University Medical Center.
In 1994 Oda gave up her home and befgan to live with her daughters. She has been a resident of the TLC unit for 3 years and Griffins Nursing Center for 3 years.
Oda Hegner Silven passed away on Monday, May 15, 2006 at the Griffins Nursing Center at the age of 109 years, 7 months, and 29 days. Oda was the oldest Knoxville resident being the same age as the Marion County Courthouse.
Those family members who preceded Oda in death were her parents, two husbands, one sister, Pearl and two brothers Felix and Louis Pedersen.
Those left to mourn her passing are two daughters Pearl and Ruth; step daughter, Marcel; 4 grandchilren, Christie, Ruth, Bob, and Douglas; 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Oda was cremated and buried on her birthday. Many of the family met in Walnut for the ceremony.
