Donato Francesco Ricardo was born on Aug. 17, 1877 and raised in Castilenti, Italy, the 3rd of nine children of Davide & Lucia. He had brothers Alfredo, Aurelio, Adalgiso, Cesare and Fioretto who died as a baby & sisters Maria & Cristina. He served in the Carabinieri from 1896 to 1905 and was a carpenter.
Dan was 28 when he married Candelora Palmina DiPanfilo in Castilenti on Sep. 29, 1905 against her parents wishes. They both were living in Penne at the time -- which was south of Castilenti.
Donato arrived at New York on March 20, 1907 when he was 30 on the ship Sannio out of Naples. When he first arrived he stayed with a friend at 529 W. 30th St. in New York City. Palmina and son Aligi followed six months later arriving in New York on Sept. 2, 1907 traveling on the ship Luisiana out of Naples.
They settled in Philadelphia where five children were born, one son & five daughters. Aligi did not appear in the 1910 census so died before 1910.
After Palmina's death on Feb. 12, 1920, Mildred, Al and Mabel went to live with their Aunt Mary Robey and Rollie, Francis and Onda lived with their Uncle Chet in Penna. until Dan married Ermina dePasquantonia in 1921 when the family reunited living in Altoona, PA for awhile before moving to Cleveland in April of 1928.
Dan was an expert cabinet maker and had a shop for a time at 231 N. Simpson St. in Philadelphia.
He and Ermina had been married 28 years and were living at 936 E. 150th when he died on July 16, 1949 at the age of 72 at home. Ermina died a year later on Nov. 23, 1950 at age 74. Both are buried at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland in Sec. 43, Lot 666.
Dan was a tall man about 6' with blue eyes and brown hair although he was bald at a young age. He also had a small handlebar mustache.
According to his nephew Aldo Calandra (from brother Cesare), Dan was an opera buff and took Al to see an opera when he was 15 in 1931. It's possible he named his first three children, Ornella, Mila and Aligi after characters in the opera La Figlia di Jorio!
