in the SW Pacific, his ship the U.S.S. McKean, was sunk by a torpedo launched from a Japanese plane.
The explosion caused severe damage & fire broke out immediately, followed by further explosions.
The men in that part of the ship struck by the torpedo had almost no opportuntity for escape. It is believed all survivors were picked up.
