Berniece H. (Hess) Eyre, 93, of Ceresco, died on Thursday, June 21, 2007, at the W Drive North Assisted Living and Adult Forster Care Home.
Mrs. Eyre was born on July 16, 1913, in Fredonia Township, to Lewis and Martha (Hornberger) Hess. On June 8, 1940, she married Clifton E. "Bill" Eyre at Zion Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on October 14, 1986.
Mrs. Eyre graduated from Marshall High School in 1931 and from Calhoun County Normal in 1934. She began her teaching career at Fredenburg Country School in Fredonia Township. She also taught in Ceresco and later retired from Wattles Park Elementary in the Harper Creek Community Schools in the mid 1970's. Mrs. Eyre at the age of 53 earned her Bachelors degree from Western Michigan University.
Mrs. Eyre was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where she helped organize vacation bible school, taught Sunday school, and volunteered for numerous church functions. She was a past member of the Altar Guild, and past chairman of Zion Senior Fellowship. She was also a past member of the Oaklawn Hospital Auxiliary, and a former 4-H leader. She also traveled extensively.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Jesse Engle of Ceresco, and son and daughter-in-law Philip and Estelle Eyre of Battle Creek. She is also survived by four grandchildren Mark (Cristi) Eyre, Michelle (John) Miller, Craig (Michelle) Engle, and Beth (Philip) Nichols all of Battle Creek, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1942, her parents, husband, and three sisters; Arlene Schildkknecht, Esther Mercer, and Martha Moore.
