On May 2, 1925, Erwin married a neighbor girl, Clara Schwartau. Clara had taught rural school after graduating from high school and later took a job as stenographer in an insurance company. The wedding ceremony was conducted in the front room of the Schwartau home with close relatives and a few friends in attendance. I was privileged to be best man at the wedding. In the evening we danced in the kitchen.
The next day Erwin and Clara went on a honeymoon and dad and Arnold went on a trip that took them through sixteen western states. Mother and I were left to mind the farm with the help of Rudolph Laemien, the German who had just arrived. He could speak little English... One Sunday afternoon he was left in the house alone. We were on a thirteen-party line with a different ring for each party. Rudolph answered every call with "Hello, this is Hinrichs, nobody home." The neighbors had a fit for having their calls interfered with.
