Death claimed one of Meta's most honored and beloved residents when Frank Otke passed away at 1:15am Friday, March 20, following a brief illness of pneumonia. Soon after he was stricken, it developed that his heart was weak and that he had very little chance to overcome the ailment owing to this and his advanced age. In his death the community loses one of its best men, the family a kind and loving husband and father.
Mr Otke was born at Aviston, Illinois, September 6, 1862, the son of George and Mary Schmolle Otke, and was 79 years, 6 months and 14 days old at the time of his death. He came to St Thomas 54 years ago, and resided there until he moved to Meta in 1903. Mr Otke operated the first steam sawmill brought to the St Thomas community, and he sawed out the lumber and built the house here in Meta where he lived ever since, and where he died. When he first came to Meta he worked for Peter Loethen, the Meta miller, but his 26 years of faithful service with the Logan-Moore Lumber Co., was the longest period of time he worked in one capacity.
Mr Otke was a life-long and faithful member of the Catholic Church and was also a member of St Cecilia Men's Sodality.
He was united in marriage February 18, 1890, to Anna Koehler, who survives him. And by the union there are three surviving children--Mrs A J (Clara) Crider of Dixon, Lucy Otke of New York City and Mrs N J (Rose) Rowan of Meta. He also leaves to mourn his departure one sister, Mrs Ellen Schoendienst of Aviston, Illinois and five grandchildren, namely, Dr Russel Crider, H N Crider, Mrs Helen Marshall, Barry Rowan and Robert Rowan, all of whom were present for the funeral.
Mr Otke was a man of honesty and integrity, and he had faith in humanity. He enjoyed meeting friends, and he had many of them. He took a great interest in his family and he never overlooked his grandchildren. He taught all of them how to drive a car, thus showing a fine spirit of comradeship to them.
Funeral services were conducted at St Cecilia Church Sunday morning at 10:15 with Requiem High Mass by the Rev. Father Hoegen, the pastor, with a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attending. The profusion of flowers bespoke the high esteem in which he was held. Funeral arrangements were in charge of H H Strop, Meta undertaker, and burial was in St Cecilia Cemetery. Pallbearers were George Huhmann, John Rehagen, Frank Heisler, Casper Eicholz, Louis Eichholz and Joe Evers.
Among the relatives ad friends present at the funeral from out of this community were Mrs Edward Schoendienst and daughter Anna and Mr and Mrs Fred Lager, Aviston, Illinois; A C Washford and family, Beckemeyer, Illinois; Lieut. Dr Russell Crider, Ft. Benning, Georgia; Miss Lucy Otke, New York City, H N Crider and wife, Owensboro, Kentucky; Mrs Helen Marshall, St Louis; Mrs Eva Palmer, Mrs Mary Cramer, Miss Evelyn Dake, Dr and Mrs A J Crider, Dixon; Leo Otke and family and Mr and Mrs W N Howard, Jefferson City; August Rockers and family and Mrs Herman Otke, Wardsville; Fred and Flo Rowan and Elmer Carlson and wife, Kansas City; Fred Lueckenhoff, Mrs Helen Sartory, MOnica Westermeyer, Mrs Frank Otke, Mrs Mary Beel, Carl Casmore, St Louis; Mrs. John Hinkleheim.
