Byron was born the son of Marshall and Inza (Garcelon) Ames. Byron passed on at Clover Manor.
After graduating from Edward Little High School in 1933, he became part-owner of Bryant & Ames Tires on Center Street. He entered the Army in 1941, and followed his enlistment by joining the Maine National Guard.
He worked for Snow's Tire Co. in Auburn and Portland. He was a charter member of the Auburn Rifle Club and he was a 32nd degree Mason.
He married Marilynn Brown of Auburn in 1943, while stationed in Fayetteville, N.C. They traveled extensively during their 63-year marriage. His family will remember him for his wit, his devotion to family and friends and his carefully kept secret, fiddlehead patches.
He is survived by his wife, Marilynn of Auburn; daughters, Judith Legendre, and her husband, Peter, of Scarborough and Karen Eames of Saco, and her former husband, Michael Myrick, of Scarborough; grandchildren, Richard Legendre, and his wife, Cathy, of Kentucky, Mason Legendre, and his wife, Sarah, of Scarborough, Addie Myrick of New Hampshire and Meghan Myrick of Virginia; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Summer; several nieces and nephews; and close friend, Col. George and Mrs. Ruth Benjamin.
Byron's family is very appreciative of the wonderful care given to him and for the kindness shown to all of them by the staff at Clover Manor.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
