He enlisted in the Army on February 22, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted as being employed as a Plumber and also as Single, with dependents.

Hersal was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart.
