William Allen Nichols served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a Corporal, Co. B, 78th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee at the close of the war. Earlier, he served in the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry and was discharged at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, for health reasons.

Elizabeth Fields Nichols was his first wife. She died 9 Nov 1883; nothing more is known of her at this time. Their children were James (died on his 21st birthday), Minnie and Jack. Nothing more is known of them at this time.
