John Rufus Jeffrey was the son of Jesse Franklin Jeffrey and Anna Mae Hellums. He married Amanda Mahaley Elizabeth Narcissis Allen 26 Feb 1861 Lavaca, Lavaca Co., TX. They had one daughter, Elvira Jeffrey born 20 Nov 1862. John served with the 17th Texas Infantry in the Civil War. He was able to return home one time to see Elvira when she was born. He was killed in the Battle of Milliken's Bend in Louisiana and buried on the battlefield.
The 17th Texas Infantry was attached to Brig. Gen. Henry E. McCulloch's 1st Brigade of Maj. Gen. John G. Walker's Division, commanded by Robert T. Allen. There is a Texas State Memorial honoring the men who served in Johnston's Army and in Walker's Texas Division. John was 31 years old when he died in battle.
