Ed's father was a stationary engineer and was working at the gravel pit in Orestes when Ed was born. His father died when Ed was nine years-old. This made life financially difficult for his mother. He started working by the time he was ten. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1933 which was during the Depression.
By December 1933 he was employed at Delco Remy and he retired from there in 1980 after 47 years. He became a Tool Room Machinist in the 1960's after completing an apprenticeship. He was a grinder in the inspection tool room and considered the best they had.
Ed usually worked a second job and met his future wife, Virginia Hersberger, when he worked at the Oldsmobile. They married Oct. 21, 1939 in Anderson. They built a house on West 11th St. in 1940 and raised their daughter in that house.
Ed took wonderful care of Ginny during her many illnesses. A few years after her death he married Nancy Blagg Rutledge on Jan 13, 1983.
Ed loved cars and automobile racing. Car shows were always a favorite activity in the fall and he never tired of Sunday drives or vacation trips.
