McGOWAN, William Charles - Born in Oakville, Connecticut on March 23, 1915, died peacefully in San Mateo, California on Sunday, November 13, 2005, after a long illness. Bill was the son of William G. McGowan and Lucy B. McGowan. He graduated from Watertown High School, the Taft School, the University of Notre Dame and Georgetown University Law School. He served in the Army during World War II, receiving his discharge in 1946 as a first lieutenant. Following graduation from law school, Bill moved to San Francisco, where he met his beloved Pauline. They were married at the Carmel Mission in 1949. Until recently, Bill was a longtime resident of Burlingame. Bill retired as vice president of Wells Fargo Mortgage Company in 1980. Previously, he had served as vice president of Bankers Mortgage Company in San Francisco and McMillan Mortgage Company in Palo Alto. He was active in the Commonwealth Club of California, the Serra Club, the Notre Dame Club of San Francisco, as well as parish organizations at Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame. Bill and Pauline were active in the Foundation for International Cooperation, serving as regional presidents. Through this organization, they hosted many overseas visitors in their home and to the Bay Area, and enjoyed travel to many countries. Bill is predeceased by two sisters and a brother. He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline of Millbrae, his three sons, Charles, William Jr., and Sean; his three daughters, Mary Hall, Anne Geddes and Elizabeth Kabala; sons-in-law Michael Hall, Jeffrey Geddes and Charles Kabala; and grandchildren Anne and Matthew Kabala, all of the Bay Area. Bill also is survived by two brothers, James and Francis McGowan, as well as many nieces and nephews, all of Connecticut. Pauline and her family would like to thank the staffs at Mills Estate Villa and at San Mateo Convalescent Hospital for the love and care they gave Dad in the final years of his life. Family and friends are invited to a memorial Mass at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 2, 2005 at Our Lady of Angels Church, 1701 Hillside Drive, Burlingame. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations in Bill's memory to St. Anthony's Dining Room, 121 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco CA 94102-3899; telephone: (415) 241-2690.
