Emmaline Schoch was born December 1, 1858, in Pickaway County, Ohio, the son of Benjamin Wolf Schoch and Elizabeth Wann. She was married on September 30, 1883, in Wells County, Indiana, to Abner Chalfant, son of Reason and Catharine Valentine Chalfant. They were the parents of 3 children: Mellie Pearl, Brent and Harrison Chalfant.

Obituary for Emmaline Schoch Chalfant from the Bluffton Evening News-Banner of Wednesday, March 26, 1941:

"DEATH OCCURS TUESDAY EVENING FOLLOWING ILLNESS; FUNERAL THURSDAY. Mrs. Emma Chalfant, widow of Abner Chalfant, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of a son, Harry Chalfant, 411 South Main Street, following an illness of several months. Death was attributed to infirmities of age. On January 6, she was removed from her home in the 800 block of South Main Street to the son's home, where she had been bedfast since. Born December 1, 1858, in Ohio, the decedent was the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Waun Schoch. She came to Wells County with her parents when she was 10 years of age, and since her marriage September 30, 1883, at Reiffsburg, had made her home in Wells County and Bluffton. Surviving are two sons, Brent Chalfant, south of Bluffton, and Harry Chalfant, of this city; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Fred Schoch, of Mishawaka, a half-sister, Mrs. Nellie Esch, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. A daughter, Mellie Pearl; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Durr and Mrs. J. B. Poffenberger; a brother, Willie Schoch, and a half-sister, Mrs. Rena Downing, are deceased. The body will be taken from the Jahn Funeral Home this evening to the home of the son, Harry Chalfant. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Methodist Church, of which Mrs. Chalfant was a member, in charge of Rev. E. R. Garrison, assisted by Rev. Morris Coers. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery."
