Born in Dover Township, York County, the son of Adam & Elizabeth (Miller) Ettinger, he married Sarah Harrison in New Berlin, Union County, Pennsylvania, February 12, 1848, and fathered Florence (b. @1851), Ella (b. @1854), Catherine "Kate" (b. @1857), Albert W. (b. 06/11/60), Elmer Ellsworth (b. 10/10/64), Millard S. (b. 08/11/67), and Elizabeth K. "Lizzie" (b. 10/11/70). [NOTE: Childrens' birth dates vary with the source.] In 1860, he was a printer living in York, York County, and stood 5' 8" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service from three different locations:
1. Enlisted at an unstated age in York. mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 25, 1861, as 1st sergeant of Co. H, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1861.
2. Drafted at the stated age of thirty-three in Lancaster County October 22, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 5, 1862, as a private with Co. C, 172nd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but soon promoted 1st lieutenant and later to captain to date May 6, 1863. He honorably discharged with his company August 1, 1863.
3. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-six in New Berlin, Union County, August 15, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 1 as a private with Co. D, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. On September 22 following, he was promoted to the rank of musician and transferred to Co. F, honorably discharging with his company June 1, 1865.

By 1880, he and his family were living in Washington Township, Dauphin County.
