Known to friends and family as Fern, and as Mimi to her grandchildren and great-grand children, Mrs. Bartran was a gentle and loving soul, who was devoted member of the Christian Science Church.
Winona Fern Moore was born 6 January 1923 in Mart, Texas to Perry and Pruddie Moore. She was born just a few weeks before her sister's first birthday. Her mother passed away when Fern was just 7 months old, so she and her sister were raised in two households, that of their maternal Aunt Nettie "Mother Jones" and that of her father and his third wife "Mother Myrle".
Prior to World War II, Fern met and married her husband, David Bartran in Washington D.C. while working for the War department. Fern and David had 5 children before David died in 1965.
Fern is remembered for doing the twist to Chubby Checker as well as doing jumping jacks in her driveway to greet and say farewell to guests. She enjoyed playing living room games with her grandchildren, such as 'hot-potato' with a beach ball. Throughout her life she was driven to self improvement and self respect through her many talents, such as calligraphy, music and painting.
She is survived by all five of her children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Her memory will fondly reside in the hearts of all of us.
