Marius, of Miami, Florida. Born and raised in Miami, he graduated in 2002 from Miami Coral Park Senior High School, having joined the Army ROTC during school. He worked a series of retail and restaurant jobs and studied computer systems at the ITT Technical Institute before entering the military February 28, 2007 at Miami. He completed Initial Entry Training at Fort Benning, Georgia before reporting to Fort Lewis on July 17, 2007, where he was initially assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division on July 7, 2007. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division on September 6, 2007. Before leaving for Iraq, he came home for the funeral of his grandfather, Manuel, and shared a pre-Thanksgiving meal with his widowed mother and only brother. Marius' father died in 1992. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of private first class, a Bronze Star for valor and a Purple Heart. He died when an improvised explosive device detonated during a mounted patrol in Baquabah, Iraq, only weeks after arriving in Iraq. He and three other soldiers were passing out candy and toys to Iraqi children at the time. All were killed.
