During the Civil War he served in Company E of the 32nd Georgia Infantry. He was enlisted as a private in Savannah on 7 May 1862 by Col. G.P.Harrison, Jr. "for 3 years or the (duration) of the war". He was commissioned as a Jr. 2nd Lt. on 22 July 1862. By 3 May 1863 he appears in records at the rank of Lt.
He was reported wounded near Sanderson Florida on 22 Feb 1864 (Battle of Olustee aka Ocean Pond) and again at Johns and James Islands, South Carolina from July 1-10 1864. He was officially elected to the rank of Lt., 22 July 1864.
He was paroled at the end of the war at Greensboro, North Carolina 1 May 1865.
