Birth: May 26, 1782
Blacksburg
Montgomery County
Virginia, USA
Death: Jun. 20, 1858
Muscatine County
Iowa, USA

Catherine Barger was born May 26, 1782 at Blacksburg, Virginia, and died Jun 20, 1858 in Muscatine County, Iowa at the age of 76.

She was the second wife of John Daniel Helm, Junior. They were married Oct 11, 1798 in Montgomery County, Virginia. He was the son of John Daniel Helm, Senior and Sophia Magdalena Mohr. He was born Mar 31, 1773 and died Apr 1, 1854 at the age of 81.

The Register of Marriages, Montgomery County, Virginia 1777-1783, page 78 (in the Virginia State Library in Richmond) states: "Date of bond 15 Oct 1798, Name of Husband John D. Helms. Name of wife Catherine Barriger, Security and Witness Philip Barriger."

Deed Book D, Montgomery County, page 475 dated Nov 29, 1806, states that Philip's daughter Catherine, the fourth generation of the family, was involved in surrendering at least a portion of the original 507 acres purchased by Casper in 1754. The entry shows that John Daniel Helms and Catherine, a representative of Philip Barger, surrendered 1/8 share of 395 acres, listed as part of the 507 acres of Casper Barger, and 172 acres, part of the 425 acres of Philip Barger, to John Preston.

The remainder of the land controlled by the remaining members of the family was either sold or willed to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), then the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, in the 1800s.

About 1850, Catherine and John Daniel Helm moved to Iowa, according to the 1856 Iowa census.

In the 1856 census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Bloomington Township, "Catharine Helm," age 73, is listed with F. D. Helm, age 34. She is incorrectly listed as married, and indexed incorrectly as having been born in Vermont, but the census page shows "Va" to be her place of birth. Living with them was Jane Helm, 24, and Caroline Helm, 22. All had been living within the state for six years. (Iowa State Census Collection, Roll IA_63, pages 305-306, line 35)

Catherine was buried beside her husband and daughter Sophia in the Vanattta (Houtz) Cemetery, Seventy-Six Township, Section 4, Muscatine County, Iowa. The cemetery is located in a farmer's field 5.3 miles east of Iowa route 70 on Highway 22, then two miles south and 1.2 miles west, on the north side of the road. Alternate directions (2001): 6.0 miles west of the Muscatine 61 bypass on County Road G28 (also known as 231st St.). There are two signs on the 61 bypass-- larger sign showing Hershey street which goes east towards Muscatine and a small blue and yellow sign showing G28 which goes west towards Conesville, IA. Go west at this intersection towards Conesville for 6 miles. The cemetery will be on the right. Another set of directions: Travel west of Muscatine on Highway 22, turn left on High Prairie Road and go about two miles south, turn right, go past Jasper Avenue and past the house on the right. No church is standing nearby. Her tombstone reads: "Catharine, wife of J. D. Helm. Died June 20, 1858. aged 76 Y's 25 D's."
