George was the son of Nathaniel Whiting and Mercy Young. He was born in Vermont, most likely in Guilford. His family removed to New York around 1830. Sometime during the early 1840's, George married and left his wife due to misconduct. He migrated west to join his birth family, and bought land in Montrose, Lee County, Iowa next to the Barnum farm. He married Nancy Barnum on September 15, 1844.
George purchased property from his father in Nauvoo, Illinois, before Nathaniel's departure with the westward bound Latter-Day Saints in the 1840's.
George and Nancy removed to Marquette County, Wisconsin about 1846. He thereupon purchased land, and farmed. The couple had three children: Adeline, George and Viola. George was killed by a strike of lightning in 1854. Nancy and her children returned to Keokuk, Iowa, while his brother John administered the estate.
In George's probate records, John states that George had two sisters still living: "Eliza A Duel and Polly Duel (Mary Duel)".
