Hugh was the son of David and Betsey (Brown) McQuiston. Hugh came from County Antrim, Northern Ireland with his family to South Carolina in 1772. He moved to Israel Township, Preble County, Ohio, in 1808. He and his wife Margaret Gaston were married in 1796 and had six children-William (Nancy Boyd), Joseph (Elizabeth Hogue), David (Jannett McDill, Janet Bonner, Margaret Hamilton), Eliza (1803-1810), Archibald (Mary Bonner, Nancy McMillan), and Hugh (Nancy McDill, Elizabeth Wilson). They were founders of the Hopewell Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Israel Township.
