THE WILLIAM DAVIS FAMILIES

The first Davis family had its beginning in Freestone County in the late 1800s. In 1890, William took as a bride, Polly Robinson. They reared two sons, Emit and Arque and two daughters, Ella and Celestine. Having no evidence of what happened in their marriage, I can only assume both William and Polly had irreconcilable differences and separated around 1902. Around 1915, Emit and Arque moved to moved to Guthrie, OK and Polly soon followed. William Davis started a new life in Navarro County. By Maurice Davis

The second Davis family had its beginning in Navarro County early in the 1900s when Willam Davis, a then young minister, son of Benjamin and Harriet Davis of Freestone County, moved to Richland. In 1903, he took as a bride, Essie Ewey, daughter of Robert and Maude Ewey, formerly of Gregg County. It was in Richland William and Essie Davis reared their eight sons and four daughters. It was in Richland also that they both died, he December 25, 1956 and she October 24, 1970. William Davis built two churches in Navarro County, Rock Hill Baptist in Richland and Mt. Olive Baptist in Corsicana, and served as pastor until his retirement in 1949. Mt. Olive was served by a son, Elmer until his death on January 31, 1973. He also built a church in Wortham, Beulah which he served for many years. At the death of Mrs. Davis, there were 111 living descendants -- eleven children (the second daughter having expired in 1960), 42 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. William and Essie were strong-willed, law-abiding Christian parents who taught their children their Christian precepts and lived to see the fruits of their labors. In chronological order, these are their immediate offspring: Henderson, a retired service station operator of Mexia, 11 children, 22 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren: Olen, bakery employee, Albuquerque, NM, 4 children, 4 grandchildren: Elmer, deceased, minister, 2 children, 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren: E. J., Streetman, Mexia State School employee, 1 child, 3 grandchildren: Jessie Lee, Richland, semi-retired domestic, 11 children, 22 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild: Zeltee, Lemoore, CA, retired naval officer, no children: Willie Lee, deceased: Frederick, Tulsa, OK, American Airlines employee, 2 chhildren, 5 grandchildren: Martin (Jack), Corsicana, mechanic, 5 children, 6 grandchildren: Thelma, Dallas, English Instructional Facilitator, no children: Lela, Richland, Medical Arts Clinic in Corsicana, 3 children, 1 grandchild. The family "reins" is still being held tight by "Aunt Jessie", 86 year old twin sister of Mrs. Davis who believes the same guiding principles by which the children were reared are pertinent to their future survival.
