Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first in the 2nd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry as its Sergeant Major, then as an officer in the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, rising to Major and commander of the unit. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the battle of the Wilderness, Va." He served as Chief of the Old War Division of the United States Pension Bureau from 1885 to 1889.
