Excerpt from "History of the Tacoma Eastern Area" published in 1954 and republished in 1989 by Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society (with photos added from various sources) under the new title "History of Southeastern Pierce County". The excerpt below is from the chapter "Bridges over the Nisqually River".

..."One of these bridges was taken out by a flood and another was built in it's place. It was O.K.'d by the State about five o'clock in the evening but the river again rising took the new bridge out before midnight, Dec. 17, 1917."

"In December 17 the bridge was washed out. It was an absolute necessity for the towns across the river to have a way of crossing over to Elbe, as all mail, grocers, and commercial interests demanded it. What was to be done now while another bridge was to replace the one gone out? Well, the Swanson Brothers had the solution. They erected two cables. The first cable was carried across to the opposite side by one of the Swanson boys who swam the river with the cable. A box or basket large enough to hold three people without luggage was placed on the cable and another cable was used to carry this basket or box back and forth across the river. The charge was 25 cents for a passenger."

"A baby daughter around a week old of Mr. & Mrs. Anthony had died and the time for the funeral had been set. The first passenger over the cable was this baby in her casket."...
