Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous)
Corporal, 5e Régiment de genie de combat
(5 Combat Engineer Regiment) based at CFB Valcartier near Québec City. Aged 31, from Québec City. He was deployed with the
2e Batallion, Royal 22e Régiment Battle Group of the Canadian contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan.
Cpl Drouin and Major Yannick Pépin were killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their armoured vehicle in the Dand District, approximately 14 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City. Five other soldiers received non-life threatening injuries and were evacuated to hospital for treatment.
The deaths bring to 129 the number of military casualties since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
Cpl Drouin was described as an exemplary soldier who showed great promise and leadership capacities. He had been a sapper for three years and had been promoted to corporal before deploying for Afghanistan with the 51st Field Engineer Squadron. Known as "Big Drou", he was a very generous man with a big heart and a bon vivant who liked to make others laugh.
Cpl Drouin is survived by his partner, Audrey Beaucage, parents Marc Drouin and Diane Mac Comeau, sister Marie-Claude, extended family and friends.
Funeral, with full military honours, held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the St. Louis de Courville Church in Beauport, a suburb of Québec City. Burial of ashes in the parish cemetery at a later date.
