Alexander Snowden was born 26 June 1841 near St. Joseph, Missouri and had at least one brother James (Jim). Their parents died when Alexander was about seven years old and the two boys were raised by relatives. He was a "churn boy" and was made to churn butter every day for room and board and became so tired of the task that he moved in with neighbor.

Alexander was 16 years old when he joined a westward wagon train and became a "bull whacker" which were men with long whips used to drive cattle. His rounded shoulders were supposedly caused from sleeping on cows or using sleeping cows for pillows or props. Among his wagon train journeys, two were made as a wagon boy and one as a driver from St. Joseph, Missouri to Salt Lake City, Utah. One of his wagon train trips was made after his marriage, December 25, 1864. The trip lasted more than six months.

Farming became his occupation. From 1865 to about 1877 Alexander and Mary Gilleland Snowden lived in Mills County, Iowa later moving to the Jewel, Kansas area. In 1880 they were living in Atchison County, Missouri. He was living in Nebraska city, Nebraska area in 1916 when he announced the wedding of his daughter Charlotte.
