John W. Bradford, "Grandpa Bradford" May 12, 1839 – December 22, 1902
The only recollection I have of him is Mother told me that he had been shot off his horse during the Civil War and was injured and discharged. According to the records I have obtained, he fell off the horse during drill. Also it appears he was discharged and then reenlisted and served a second time. He may have done this to obtain the bounty paid for enlistment. These records make for interesting reading. They contain letters in his handwriting and also his father's, B.B. Bradford. His pension states that had a first wife whom he divorced and she died in Chicago. I found a marriage record and she had the same first name as Great Grandmother Bradford.
He served in Company E, 3rd Regiment of the Michigan Cavalry from October 7, 1861 to his disability discharge in Brownsville Arkansas, October 24, 1864. March and April of 1862 he shown to be in a hospital at St. Louis, Missouri and June 1862 was sent home on sick leave. That is what the letters shown below are all about, the Army sent him home and they would contact him. In the mean time his Company had him as AWOL and later a deserter. September 2, 1864 he enlisted in Company C, 2nd Regiment, Veterans Reserve Corps. This is interesting, he enlisted before he was discharged in October. He was Mustered Out November 14, 1865. While with this group he served as a guard on the Potomac and a teamster in Detroit. According to the records he was 5' 8" tall, light complexion, blue eyes and sandy hair.
