Dr. Joseph Paul Guido, age 88, of Millsboro, Del., formerly of Fairmont died on April 8, 2013 in Lewes, DE.
Dr. Guido was born on April 14, 1924 in , WV, the son of the late John and Rose Mary Maruka Guido.
Dr. Guido attended Grant Town Elementary School and Fairview High School where he earned the Golden Horseshoe Award for his knowledge of West Virginia history. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he attended Fairmont State College and the University Of Maryland School Of Dentistry from which he graduated in 1951 with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery. He was a member of the Gorgas Odontontogical Society, the University of Maryland Honorary, the American Dental Association, the West Virginia Dental Association, Monongahela Valley Dental Association, the Marion County Dental Society and the Psi Omega Dental Fraternity.
He retired from his dental practice in 1986 and moved to Delaware to enjoy his retirement. In his youth, he loved singing especially in the church choir and his barbershop quartet. He also enjoyed golf, fishing and boating and in recent years, he spent much time taking drives, traveling, reading and cheering for the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Dr. Guido served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the U.S. Coast Artillery and served 26 months in the European Theater of Operation. He served 34 months of active duty with the U.S. Army and 36 months of inactive reserve duty following World War II. He was discharged January 5, 1946 from Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Dr. Guido's army unit was awarded 4 bronze stars for their participation in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe battles and campaigns. He was a member of the American Legion Oak Orchard-Riverdale Post 28 in Millsboro, DE.
His devoted wife, Therése Patricia (Pat) Oles Guido, the love of his life, whom he married in Baltimore, MD in 1951, survives him. He is also survived by his five children Joseph P. Guido II and Elizabeth (Bunny) of Fairmont, Dr. Bruce P. Guido of Ashtabula, OH, Gregory L. Guido of Eglon, WV, Patricia L. Sell and Mark of Bluefield, VA and John M. Guido and Katherine of Hurricane, WV. He was blessed with nine grandchildren, Craig Harrison Guido and wife Allison; Bruce Phillip Guido, II and Laura Elise Guido; Franklin Joseph Sell, Therése Evelyn Jeans and husband Blake, Christin Rose Sell and fiancé Neil Gaskill, and Sophia Angela Sell and fiancé Benjamin Bishop; John Michael Guido, II and Christopher Matthew Guido; one great grandson, Giovanni Quinn Guido; and one step granddaughter, Joselyn Hammock. He is also survived by one sister-in-law, Alice (Dolly) Guido.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ross Guido, and his sister, Gloria Ann Forte and her husband, Michael J. Forte.
Dr. Guido was a devout Roman Catholic who prayed the rosary daily. He was formerly a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Monongah, WV and a current member of Mary Mother of Peace Parish in Millsboro, Delaware.
Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home 801 Fairmont Ave. Fairmont on Friday from 1- 8 PM. Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday April 13th at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Monongah with Father Steve Joseph as celebrant.
Interment will follow at Mt Carmel Cemetery.
