James "Pappy" Gower, 93, of Grant Town, passed away Friday (Sept. 14, 2012) at Fairmont General Hospital.

He was born March 20, 1919 in Kitzmiller, Md., a son of the late Isaac Ernest and Sarah Melissa Harvey Gower. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Sarah Belle "Sadie" Lucas Gower, in 2002.

Mr. Gower was a member of Baxter Church of God. James retired in 1984 from Eastern Coal Co. Federal No. 1 of Grant Town. He served a total of 45 years in the mines, including the No. 3 Hamilton Coal Co. in Kitzmiller, Md. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Parsons prior to his mining employment.

He is survived by sons, Larry and his wife Pat Gower, William "Lug" and his wife Judy Gower, Ron and his wife Dotty Gower, Milton "Hatch" and his wife Brenda Gower, and Tom and his wife Mary Gower, all of Marion County, and John and his wife Trish Gower of Logan; nine grandchildren, Terry Lee, Matthew, B.J., Missy, Chad, Michael, Michelle, Jennifer and Ronnie; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Gower of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred Gower; two daughters-in-law, Diane Gower and Joy Lynn Gower; a grandchild, Joey Gower; and brothers and sisters, Harvey Gower, John Gower, Dale Gower, Maryland Gower Ford and Geneva Mae "Dee" Gower.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Gower's grandsons, Matthew, B.J., Chad, Michael and Ronnie.

Memorial contributions may be made to Baxter Church of God, PO Box 149, Baxter, WV 26560.

Friends and family may call Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, Second and Jasper streets, from 4-8 p.m. today, from 1-8 p.m. Monday and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday. The service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Doug Wyatt officiating. Interment will follow at Linn Cemetery in Benton's Ferry.
